Every council has a number of common goals. In most cases, one of those goals is to regularly put on service programs for the parishes and communities we serve. You are probably well aware these programs require the time and talents of our members to be successful. But you shouldn’t expect the same group of guys to step up and work the same events year after year. To ensure you have enough people on hand at these events, you must keep your current members informed of what is going on while recruiting new members to join. Councils want to attract more members, but don’t realize that they may be, in fact, unattractive. Don’t assume just because your council exists or that you hold regularly scheduled meetings that people will show up. You must inform members and those who may be interested in joining what the Knights of Columbus do.
INFORMATION + COMMUNICATION =
PARTICIPATION
A council web site is a good tool to share information among members and new recruits. But there is more to just having a council web site on the Internet. The web site must be up to date to be useful. The visitor must be attracted to participate. If your council’s web site lists the new officers from 2007 as the most recent news, you’re not likely to get a return visit from that person. The Summer 2010 revision of Tuscaloosa, AL Knights of Columbus web site was just one of these attractive improvements. Many liked the look and ease of our web site and suggested we make it available to other councils.
The web site offered here utilizes a powerful web site publishing tool called WordPress. WordPress says on their web site, “[WordPress] has grown to be the largest self-hosted blogging tool in the world, used on millions of sites and seen by tens of millions of people every day. It allows you to manage pages and posts within your web site. If you are able to compose an email with bold, italic, underlined, or colored text, or use various font types or font sizes, you can publish the content in your web site using WordPress. The WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) and HTML (hyper-text markup language) editors give you the control to format the content within your web site’s pages just as you would like.
