Feature Glossary

Pre-installed Theme

Your web site comes with a pre-installed theme.  A WordPress theme is a way to “skin” your site.  Themes control the look and presentation of the material on your web site.  The current theme is based on WordPress’ recently relasesed theme Twenty Ten; our’s is called Twenty Ten Alpha.  It supports widget areas that allow customization of where certain information is displayed.  Additional themes will be added in the future.

Customizable Header Graphic

The Twenty Ten theme comes with a selection of pre-defined header images. It’s easy to switch between any of the included header images or upload your own. You can even use a different custom header image for each post by including a Featured Image when you publish a new post.

WYSIWYG & HTML Editors

WordPress uses the Texturize engine to intelligently convert plain ASCII (text) into typographically correct XHTML entities. This includes quotes, apostrophes, ellipses, em and en dashes, multiplication symbols, and ampersands.  Basically, it’s WYSIWYG, or What You See Is What You Get! If the conversion isn’t just right for you, you can toggle to the HTML editor and tweak the markup.

Pages & Posts

Pages allow you to manage the static information you wish to make available on your web site.  The About Us page is a good example of a static page.  Since the text on this page is unlike to change very often, About Us should be a page.  A post could be considered a page with a date stamp.  A meeting announcement or Knight of the Month would be appropriate uses of the post feature.  Pages are quickly accessed from the menu in the header.  The most recent 10 posts are listed on the home page.  Older posts can be accessed by viewing the archives or searching.

Password Protected Pages/Posts

Access to certain pages or posts can be limited to those individuals who have been given a shared password.  The author of the content can selected this visibility option and a password.  When a visitor arrives at this page, the password must be entered before the content is displayed.

Search & Archives

Web site visitors can use the built-in search feature to find pages and posts containing the keyword.  Posts are categorized into month-specific archives.  This allows visitors to find a post that occurred during a specific period of time.

Multiple Authors

You can have an unlimited number of authors within your web site.  Author accounts will be assigned a user role that defines different privileges with regard to publishing, editing, options, and other users.

Domain Mapping

By default, your web site will be created on a sub-domain of a domain we operate.  It’ll be something like http://c1234.kofcwebhosting.com.  Some council’s may be happy with this, but others will want to personalize their website address.  Once you’re website is ready to launch, you can request to map a domain that you control to your web site.

Backups

We perform periodic backups of your uploaded files, page and post data, user and site settings.  If you inadvertently delete something, contact us for assistance in recovering this data.

Transfer Bandwidth

Every time somebody visits your web site, or downloads a file from it, they use a little bit of transfer bandwidth in the process.  Our plans come with generous amounts of included bandwidth per month.  You should rarely ever come close to reaching your bandwidth limit.

Disk Storage

Each file you upload to your web site has a particular file size.  The sum of the file sizes constitute your disk storage.  Our plans include various amounts of disk storage space.  Storage Space is displayed to logged in users on their Dashboard.

Google Gmail

Using Google’s web-based Gmail application, up to 50 email mailboxes can be created on a domain you control.  Access your mail at http://mail.yourdomain.com or via POP3/IMAP using email clients that your users choose.  Each mailbox comes with over 7GB of storage (and growing)!  You’ll get the awesome performance, reliability, and spam filtering that Gmail users currently enjoy.  You can even choose to use a custom logo.

Mailing Lists

Whether you call them announcement lists, distribution lists, or discussion lists, a varying number of these mailing lists powered by Mailman are included.  Use one to send weekly announcements to your members.  Create a second one consisting of First Degree Knights letting them know of an upcoming Second Degree.  Setup a third to allow your officers to communicate with the other.  Allow visitors to your web site to opt-in to your newsletter mailing list allowing anyone in your community to stay informed of your activities.

Money-back Guarantee

We’re proud to offer an unconditional 30-day money-back guarentee on all of our plans.  If, for any reason, you wish to cancel service, contact us letting us know you’d like to cancel and get your money refunded.  You’ll have everything you’ve paid us refunded.  The only exception is the domain registration fee.  That fee covers the non-refundable cost of registering your domain for a year.  Since you own that domain, you’re welcome to use it with another host if you’d like.
